About us

"The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you should love him as yourself; for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God." Leviticus 19:33-34

The ESL program at First Baptist Church of Fort Mill is an outreach ministry to internationals in our community who desire to increase their ability to speak English. Classes are offered each Tuesday during the school year (we follow the same calendar as the Fort Mill School District. Check out this video!

The Beginner classes stress building language skills to assist students in functional communication. The Intermediate classes build on student’s vocabulary and help develop solid communication skills needed for everyday interactions. Advanced students use their knowledge base to explore "Americanisms," idioms, and cultural issues, in addition to working on proper grammar and pronunciation. All students participate in a phonics program learning to form and pronounce sounds common to the English language. Time is also spent in each class learning a level-appropriate Bible verse which corresponds with the lesson of the day.

When you visit our Tuesday morning program you will meet dedicated and trained ESL teachers, childcare workers, and other volunteers along with a large group of ESL students from our program who are laughing, smiling, hugging, eating, and sharing a faltering “hello” with their new friends. The ESL program provides a safe place for students to learn, make new friends, and fit in with others in a Christ-centered environment. Students come expecting to learn and be fed, both spiritually and literally.  Afterwards, they leave with a better understanding of the English language and of God’s Word.

Prospective students may begin any time during the academic year.  Classes closely follow the Fort Mill School District Calendar.
